Keep Your Home Safe
Make Your Home Look Occupied Use timer switches for lights, radios, or TVs when you’re out. Ask a neighbour to collect post or use a mail hold service. Keep curtains/blinds in a “normal” position, fully closed all day can signal you’re away.
Strengthen Your Security Ensure doors and windows are locked, even if you’re only out briefly. Fit good-quality locks and consider upgrading to anti-snap locks. Install a visible alarm system or CCTV, these can deter opportunistic offenders.
Be Smart with Keys Never leave spare keys hidden outside (burglars know where to look). Avoid labelling keys with your address. Keep keys out of sight from windows and doors.
Light Up the Outside Install motion-sensor lighting to remove hiding places. Keep hedges and fences trimmed to improve visibility.
Think Before You Post Avoid advertising holidays or expensive purchases on social media. Dispose of packaging carefully so it doesn’t highlight valuable items inside your home.
Look Out for Each Other Get to know your neighbours and report anything suspicious. Join or start a local neighbourhood watch group if possible.
Report Concerns If you notice suspicious activity or feel something isn’t right, report it promptly. In an emergency, always call 999.
